MOC Space Crater Plate

Update 4/11-22: I’ve exchanged some bricks to make it a bit sturdier. And swapped some small bricks with a bigger brick here and there 🙂

Update 9/9-22: I’ve finally had time to revisit the Crater. I’ve replaced most of the smaller bricks with bigger bricks (for instance four 1×1 with one 1×4 and two, three or four 2×2 with one 2×4, 2×6 or 2×8). I’ve also changed the colour of some of the internal pieces to yellow to make it easier to read the instructions. These pieces can be any colour. In the inventory, they are marked with ‘Any Colour’. I’ve also moved some pieces to other steps in the instructions to increase visibility.

I love the new LEGO set 10497 Galaxy Explorer! But, there’s something missing, the Moonbase and the Landing plate.

The Moonbase and Landing Plate was originally designed for a buildingcontest in the local LUG here in Norway, Brikkelauget.

Here is my Crater Plate, 1,5 time bigger than the original found in set 305 Two Crater Plates. Made to match the new 10497 Galaxy Explorer.

I know the instructions are not that good. This is for advanced builders. Many hidden bricks can be of a different coulor that LBG. I also know that I many places could have replaced for instance two 1×2 bricks with one 1×4 brick, or four 1×1 bricks with one 1×4 brick. But I didn’t 🙂 Some places the slopes are split in two, but could have used one slope, I think that this breakes the surface and adds to the texture. You can do what you want, make it your own 🙂

I like the new Galaxy Explorer 10497, and wanted to display it with a brickbuilt crater plate on the shelf. The currently available set 75334 seemed a perfect fit as a parts donor: A lot of grey slopes, wedges and plates. And if you’re lucky, you can find it without figures for a very low price.

After some experiments I came up with this model: It doesn’t need a baseplate, has similar dimensions to the original (upscaled by 1.5), and uses most of the parts of 75334. It has a lot more visible studs, but I actually like that. It’s not super sturdy, but can be handled with a little bit of care. As a small bonus, it comes apart in two pieces for easier setup or transport.
